Koch-Rajbongshi folk songs travels to Rajasthan & Awadh | Kalpana Patowary & Trilok Gurtu

Koch-Rajbongshi folk songs travels to Rajasthan & Awadh | Kalpana Patowary & Trilok Gurtu “Mostly people assume that Assamese folk music is one singular category--Bihu” explains Indian folk vocalist Kalpana Patowary, “but it has a variety of styles, each one with different techniques and compositions.” Kalpana Patowary digs deeper into traditional folk compositions she has learnt from the masters in their villages. These are songs and sounds that are often on the verge of slipping away from the community’s collective memory. To present it to the urban audience is another challenge altogether. “City audience mostly know only the folk repertoire that has made its way into Bollywood. But there is a world of folk music from Assam beyond that and I want to share those lesser-known but equally rich compositions.

Kalpana Patowary collaborated on a track 'Massical' with world renowned percussionist Trilok Gurtu and world musicians like Dilshad Khan, Phil Drummy, Joachim Becker, Davide Rondelli, Carlo Cantini, Roland Cabezas, Nitin Shankar, Johan Berby. ”This track called 'Massicle' released from Bird Jam music label Germany is a combination of contemporary folk of Koch-Rajbonshi community of Assam blended with traditional repertoire with unique sound and crossover aesthetics from Awadh in Uttar Pradesh to Rajasthan presented by one and only world renouned percussionist Trilok Gurtu in his own unique style. The rhythm and groove instantly takes one to the lanes of Assam and Kalpana’s vocals create a magic one can’t escape and takes the track to a climax and subtly capture the innocence of rustic sounds.

An amazing track by Trilok Gurtu from his album Massical released  in 2009 in Germany by BHM Productions.
