1941 Caterpillar D2 5J Rebuild Part 19 Test Excursion After Servicing

1941 Caterpillar D2 5J Rebuild Part 19 Test Excursion After Servicing In north Texas, a few dry days above 50 deg F are welcome in January. With all of the servicing and upgrades performed on the 1941 Caterpillar D2 5J tractor, a test drive is in order.

Of particular interest is the oil pressure. Before servicing it always seemed low, less than 20psi. Now it is nearly 25psi. The oil pump bypass regulator probably needs adjustment since the specification is 30psi at normal engine speed and operating temperature. While not a problem the operating temperature never gets very high. Only about 145 deg. F. Another thing is the fuel pressure. It should show full scale on the gauge when the diesel engine is running but only shows about half. The pump bypass spring was replaced but not the plunger. It is possible it is not seating due to dirt or a flake of rust.

A couple of rebuild tasks remain cleaning the radiator screen, replacing the hour meter cover spring, reassembling the injection pump drip tubing, replacing the main engine air cleaner brass tag and replacing the blacksmith made throttle linkage with proper Caterpillar part.
