Two or more resistors are said to be in connected in series combination, if same current passes through each of them, when some potential difference is applied across the combination. The equivalent resistance of the combination is the algebraic sum of all the resistances in that series combination.
If Rs is the resistance equivalent to the series combination,
Rs = R1+ R2 + R3 +........+ Rn
Two or more resistors are said to be in connected in parallel combination, if same potential difference is applied across each of them.
If Rp is the resistance equivalent to the parallel combination,
1/R_p =1/R_1 +1/R_2 +1/R_3 +......+1/R_n
