Why are there different ranges in Krav Maga?

Why are there different ranges in Krav Maga? There's different ranges in martial arts. We've all got our favourites, but are there any we're ignoring too?

=========================

There's lots of R's in martial arts and reality-based systems.
Don't worry, not gone all big bird on you just yet, but think about it.

Range, Retraction, Rotation, Repetition....

Range is one of my favourites to talk about, for me, there's so much variety. Makes it interesting. Talk about ranges at 5 distances. Here they are:

missile range, handheld weapons, punching / kicking, clinching, ground

it's not a perfect definition, there are loads of what if's but it's
a good place to start.

The longest range to consider is the missile range. This is where you can throw or project something. In self-defence it could be throwing a chair at an attacker to make an escape. Ninjas would use shurikens, and of course, there are guns too.

The next range is handheld weapons, like a baseball bat or in martial arts there's fencing with swords or sticks. This range is quite problematic, as the distance the weapon adds makes it difficult to counter and also easier for someone to generate power and attack you from further away.

Getting a little closer, we've kicks and punches. Kinda bunching them together as I'm seeing people punch from further away and kick from closer in than ever before. No longer sure where the line is if your experienced and athletic.

Clinches, boxers clinch all the time, probably more trips and throws in ye olde days before being televised. But here's the grabbing, pulling, holding, pushing and throwing.

Lots of fights go to the ground, but not always.

As I said, it's not a perfect explanation, as there are lots of examples of clinching and punching, even stabbing. like me, you'll find that you probably favour one of them.

Try to get some familiarity in these ranges, may not be perfect but as long as it's enough to survive a violent encounter. It's time worth investing.
