PAAHO CONCERNED ABOUT GROWING VAPING POPULARITY

PAAHO CONCERNED ABOUT GROWING VAPING POPULARITY The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is concerned about the growing popularity of vaping
which has been attributed to several severe respiratory illnesses and deaths in the United States
especially among young people.
Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is produced
by an e-cigarette or similar device.
There have been six confirmed deaths connected to vaping across the US – in California, Illinois,
Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota and Oregon – as well as more than 450 cases of reported lung problems.
Vaping is considered to be a safer form of smoking compared
to the traditional method. However, a number of respiratory
illnesses have been reported by those who use electronic
cigarettes.
It has been widely reported that vaping has been linked to a
number of deaths in the United States and has left many young
people hospitalized.
Over the years, vaping has become popular locally; however
there have not been any reported deaths or illnesses linked to
the practice here.
According to a U.S. report more than 200 potential cases of
serious lung illness associated with use of vaping devices was
recorded in mid-2019.

The local Substance Abuse Secretariat will be making a
statement on the matter in the coming days.
