Melanin is the pigment that is responsible for the colour of one's skin.
Low melanin gives a fairer complexion and high melanin gives a darker complexion.
The secretion of melanin is important as it protects the skin from the harmful UV radiation of the sun which could further cause various skin diseases and even skin cancer.
