Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 21) — The Department of Health is investigating the case of a five-year-old boy who arrived from Wuhan City, China and tested positive for a still unidentified strain of coronavirus amid an outbreak of a mysterious illness in the world's most populous country.
Ferchito Avelino, officer-in-charge of DOH's epidemiology bureau, said the child arrived in Cebu City with his mother on January 12. They came to Cebu to study English, Avelino added.
The child exhibited signs of respiratory illness such as fever, cough and throat irritation "prior to entering the Philippines" and was referred for hospital care, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said in a briefing on Tuesday in Manila.
He is now admitted in a hospital in Cebu City, and is "stable and afebrile," Duque added.
The unidentified boy tested negative for Middle East respiratory syndrome and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Both respiratory diseases are caused by a family of viruses called coronaviruses.
"The samples tested positive for non specific pancoronavirus assay; thus the specimen was sent to Australia to identify the specific coronavirus strain," Duque said.
The specimen of the boy was sent to Melbourne, Australia for further testing, Duque added.
The health chief said that they could get the confirmatory test results in a day or two.
"To date, there is no confirmed 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) case in the Philippines," the World Health Organization said in a statement, referring to the virus recently identified in Wuhan, China.
The boy and his mother are currently isolated in a Cebu City hospital. The woman has not shown signs of sickness as of Tuesday, according to DOH Central Visayas regional director Jaime Bernadas.
At least 12 other people who have come in contact with the boy are also being monitored by the DOH in Central Visayas. They have not yet shown symptoms of coronavirus infection, Bernadas said.

What is the novel coronavirus?
This is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans.
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness in humans and animals. In humans, this large family of viruses are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
What are the symptoms of novel coronavirus?
In confirmed cases of illness in humans, common symptoms have been acute, serious respiratory illness with fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. Based on current clinical experience, the infection generally presents as pneumonia. It has caused kidney failure and death in some cases. It is important to note that the current understanding of the illness caused by this infection is based on a limited number of cases and may change as more information becomes available.
Can it be transmitted from person to person?
This is not known with certainty at this time. The cases occurring in the same family raises the possibility of limited human-to-human transmission. Alternatively, it is possible that the infected family members were exposed to the same source of infection, for example, in a household or workplace.
How could I become infected with this virus?
To date, we do not know how humans have become infected with this virus. Investigations are underway to determine the virus source, types of exposure that lead to infection, mode of transmission and the clinical pattern and course of disease.
Is there a vaccine for the novel coronavirus?
There is no vaccine currently available.
Is there a treatment for the novel coronavirus?
There is no specific treatment for disease caused by novel coronavirus. However, many of the symptoms caused by this virus can be treated and therefore treatment should be based on the symptoms of the patient. Moreover, supportive care for infected persons can be highly effective.
What can I do to protect myself?
Exactly how people become infected with this virus is not known at this time. However, some general measures that would be prudent and help prevent the acquisition of any respiratory illness are to avoid close contact, when possible, with anyone who shows symptoms of illness (coughing and sneezing), and to maintain good hand hygiene.
