'We were anxious': Iranian-American woman says family was held at U.S.-Canada border for 5 hours

'We were anxious': Iranian-American woman says family was held at U.S.-Canada border for 5 hours Negah Hekmati, an Iranian-born U.S. citizen who was returning home to the Seattle area after a ski weekend in Canada, said she was held at the U.S.-Canada border and questioned with her family by Customs and Border Patrol for at least five hours. During a news conference on Jan. 6, she said the experience made her and her family anxious.

This is one of multiple alleged instances.

During the press conference in Seattle, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal voiced concern that the U.S. has a "skewed notion" of "what it means to be an American citizen," after the recent detentions of several Iranian-Americans at the border amid rising U.S.-Iran tensions and conflict.
