The Real Reason Your Website Should Be ADA Compliant and Accessible

The Real Reason Your Website Should Be ADA Compliant and Accessible Website Accessibility - the real people it affects daily and why it's so important. Accessibility on the web refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for individuals with disabilities, particularly vision impairments.

According to figures released in a 2012 Census, 8.1 million U.S Citizens have a vision impairment. When accessing the web, these potential customers or clients rely on screen magnifiers, screen readers, or color blind friendly palettes. Does your app or website serve their needs? When technology empowers each of us, it empowers all of us.

Elisha:
People take for granted independence and being able to do things on your own. You get tired as a person who's blind or visually impaired asking for help for things that should be accessible.

Farrah:
I use the internet a lot for my job as well as my personal life. I use it to communicate with my co-workers. I use it to communicate with my friends. I use it to make appointments. I use it to make phone calls.

Elisha:
The Web has taken some time but we're moving. It's in a better place than it has been. The issue with just accessing the Web with a computer is that there isn't a standard for Web Developers to be able to submit their design to an agency to review it. A lot of us who are blind or visually impaired are moving toward using noble devices with applications because they're cleaner. Because it's a mobile device, you can't make it busy.

Farrah:
For deaf individuals, we rely heavily on captioning. I want to know what's going on and without the close captioning, I will have no access to understand anything that's going on in that video. If I see something that doesn't have captioning, it's an automatic reaction to be disappointed. It's pointless for me to be on that website at all. It will be really nice if there were live chats for all websites. I really enjoy that interaction. I feel connected to the person even more so than the website.

Elisha:
I'm able to be just like everybody else now. I'm able to track my exercise and help my kids with their homework. I'm able to Google if I need a recipe. It's just like the world is at my fingertips.

It's just made me feel more independent and live life normally. I guess if there is a normal anymore.
