Under 18? You'll need an adult to shop at Kenwood Towne Centre during new curfew

Under 18? You'll need an adult to shop at Kenwood Towne Centre during new curfew CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Attention shoppers! The Kenwood Towne Centre is launching a new curfew. The mandatory rules impact anyone under the age of 18.

Tis' the season for hitting the mall! But not if you’re under 18-years-old and without an adult at the Kenwood Towne Centre during certain times.

For 17-year-old Morgan Brandon, the new rule raised a question: “I’m concerned if I’m 17 and I’m with an 18-year-old... am I still allowed to be in the mall?"

The answer is no. Brookfield Properties the company that owns the Towne Centre says the supervising adult must be at least 21 years old.

A spokesperson says it's being done to “eliminate disruptive behavior by unsupervised youth and create a family-friendly atmosphere.”

The new mandatory curfew program will be in effect from Thursday, December 26th, the day after Christmas, until Tuesday, December 31st. The day after Christmas it starts at noon. The 29th and 31st it’s 2 p.m. Every other day it’s 4 p.m.

Shopper Calvin Hunter, who is 19-years-old, doesn’t have a problem with the change.

“I think it’s fair because a lot of young people go to mess around at the mall and stores don’t want that. So I think it’s fair and respectful," said Hunter.

Another shopper Angie McFate, is also in favor of the curfew.

“I think it’s a great idea because last year there was a fight between some teenagers and they had to shut down, so I think a temporary curfew is a wonderful thing," said McFate.

Video from December 26th, 2018 captured a fight inside the Towne Center. Another video showed a brawl at Victoria Secret’s Pink Store, causing it to close early.

During the designated curfew time, outside of each mall entrance will be a police officer or someone from mall security. They’ll check the ID of anyone who looks under the age of 18.

Sydney Cook who is 24, expects that she’ll be flagged.

“I’m always ID’ed like everywhere I go. They always think I’m super young. Hopefully, it’s not too nitpicky. But it’ll be okay hopefully," said Cook.

An optional wristband will be offered to those over 18 so that they aren’t continually stopped by other safety officers inside. An announcement will come over the loudspeaker one hour before it goes into effect.

For some teens, the message to get out means taking their business with them. 16-year-old Amira Smith says she’ll now go to Rookwood or Liberty Township.

“Most of the teens that come here are about 16 or 17 and they go with their friends and not necessarily their family. So they might be upset with profit because most of their profit is coming from teens," said Smith.

The new rules also apply to the parking lot and sidewalks. Basically the entire Kenwood Towne Centre property. The same owner, Brookfield Properties, also runs the Florence Mall. There is no curfew in effect there.
