Safety is hard to quantify. We’ve tried for decades to measure it by looking at past results and injury rates. But safety doesn’t happen in the past. It's a present state of being. Put another way, safety only truly exists (or ceases to) in the moment. Any attempt to measure safety with a rate is just describing a ghost from the past. If more people thought about it in that manner, how might our organizations do things differently? Would we invest more in the tools and knowledge our workers need in order to safely complete their work? Hopefully, we can get the point where industry measures safety by the actions taken to create it rather than a rate that hardly describes it.
