Prescription drugs: Why are they so expensive?

The United States allows drugmakers to set their own prices for a given product — and allows every drug that's proven to be safe to come onto the market. The United States has no government panel that negotiates drug prices. Each health care insurance plan, all across the country, negotiates its own prices with drug makers separately.
