After the Brazilian Republic was proclaimed and the provinces turned into states they were allowed to have flags. Therefore many of the state flags have some relation to regional republican uprisings during the Empire. Many of these flags use the Brazilian national colors, green and yellow (and blue). The Brazilian constitution of 1937 outlawed all the provincial flags. The new constitution of 1946 legalized them again.
