112th Thevar Jeyanthi: Political Leaders throng to pay tribute

Floral tributes were paid to freedom fighter and late leader of All India Forward Bloc U Muthuramalinga Thevar on his 57th Guru Puja'' (death anniversary) and 112th birth anniversary celebrations.

Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam and senior cabinet ministers placed wreaths on the memorial and paid their homage in Pasumpon village in the Southern district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and DMK President M K Stalin, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, Senior BJP leaders Pon Radhakrishnan and H Raja, Amma Makkak Munnetra Kazhagam leader T T V Dhinakaran, AIFB leader P V Kathiravan, All India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam president Dr S Sethuraman and leaders of various political parties and Caste-based outfits also paid their homage.

The guru puja of Thevar is being observed as an official function of the State government every year. His birth anniversary and death anniversary curiously falls on the same date.

Thousands of people, including women and children belonging to the dominant Thevar community from various parts of the State also thronged the memorial and paid their homage. A large number of men and children tonsured their heads, while women took out processions from different parts to the memorial carrying milk pots and "mulapari" (germinated sprouts of grains) and offered their worship at the memorial.

Police made elaborate security arrangements in this caste-sensitive district in view of the guru puja, under the direct supervision of Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) K.Jayanth Murali.

Thevar was one of the close associates of revered freedom fighter Netaji Subash Chandra Bose. It was widely believed that due to Thevar's support, Bose defeated Pattabhi Sitaramaiah, nominated by Mahatma Gandhiji to become the President of the Indian National Congress in 1939.

When the Japanese government had on August 18, 1945 declared that Bose died in an air crash, Thevar announced at a public meeting on January 23, 1949, which happened to be the birthday of Bose, that the latter was alive and he had met him.

Thevar opposed the Shah Nawaz Committee formed by the Union government that first officially probed Bose demise. He said if the committee was reconstituted with a non-Congress person at the helm, he would produce evidence that Bose was alive. Thevar donated thousands of acres of lands, owned by his family to Dalits and Muslims and strongly resisted and struggled to repeal the Criminal Tribes Act, 1920 that restricted movements of male members belonging to about dozens of communities.
