Germany’s United Nations deputy Ambassador Juergen Schulz called on Turkey to cease its military operation in northern Syria, saying it could provide "fertile ground for the resurgence of Daesh," in a statement at the UN headquarters in New York City on Thursday.

"We call upon Turkey to cease the unilateral military action, as we do not believe it will address Turkey's underlying security concerns. Renewed armed hostilities in the north-east with further undermine the stability of the whole region," he said, speaking on behalf of Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Estonia.

"It will undermine the security of the coalition's local partners, including the Syrian Democratic Forces and risks protracted instability in north-east Syria, providing fertile ground for the resurgence of Daesh, which remains a significant threat to regional, international and European security," he added.

Erdogan announced on Wednesday the beginning of the operation to create a 'safe zone' cleared of the formerly US-backed Kurdish groups, who are considered 'terrorists' by Ankara.
