Top 5 things about practicing:
1. Pick up your instrument with purpose. Right now, I am going to noodle vs. Right now, I am going to practice.
2. Have your instrument out and visible at all times rather than have it packed away in its case. Your chances of picking it up to play will greatly increase if it’s out, staring you in the face.
3. Stretch your hands and fingers to avoid possible future carpal tunnel.
4. Attempt something new and challenging, but if you get frustrated, go and play something that you know really well, can play really well and enjoy playing. Then go back to the challenging piece. By taking a short break to do this, you will reinforce confidence in your playing (and yourself).
5. Pick up your instrument every day even if it’s only for five minutes. Chances are that once you pick up your instrument, you’ll most likely practice for more than five minutes (often times without even knowing it).
