Styx Singer Lawrence Gowan Is Ok Being Called The New Guy After 20 Years Styx Singer Lawrence Gowan Is Ok Being Referred To As The New Guy
September 5, 2019 – Gowan has been with the band for 20 years. He told Postmedia, “At this point in my life, I like to say that I’m very happy for anything I do in my life to be referred to as new, So if you want to refer to me as the new guy, I accept that with great gratitude.”

Gowan looks at Styx with a huge sense of respect, “Part of me knows that it’s the legacy of the band that they are trying to uphold, the spirit of the band, That’s a big, big part of it. But, you know, I saw the Rolling Stones a couple years ago and during that show, it dawned on me heavily that Ron Wood is such an integral part of that band and yet he’s the third guitarist I’ve known in that band. How is that? I know the Brian Jones Rolling Stones and the Mick Taylor Stones and the Ron Wood Stones and yet they all seem to seamlessly be part of the same thing. I began to realize that, for the most successful transitions in bands that have to get a new member, the spirit of the band has to survive.”

His solo albums have always had some tips-of-the-hat to prog music adding, “So when I came into Styx, it felt like we were definitely of the same tribe.”

As we've reported before the band is performing their hit “Mr. Roboto” for the first time in 35 years. The tune and the album it comes from “Kilroy Was Here” created a huge divide within the band especially between original singer Dennis DeYoung (who left in 1999) and the other two singers Tommy Shaw and James Young. The albums concept and theatrical stage show alienated a lot of fans so Gowan talked about that too. He said, “The scars that the original members had to suffer through on that tour ran very deep, They ran deep enough that they destroyed the band for the rest of the ’80s. Although they never said anything disparaging about the music, they felt the whole Kilroy Was Here was, for them, a tough experience. But, for me, the new guy, I was saying a lot of people ask for that song, why don’t we just play it? I like the character. I like singing from the perspective of someone who has something to hide and about to reveal it to an audience. That really is the heart of quite a few of my own songs. I find it total fun to play that song.” - by John Beaudin
