It was a pretty uneventful day when we left Elkhart, IN and started making our way to Pentwater, MI for Camp KYD. As a result, the GoPro’s were not mounted to the windshield like usual. When we rolled up to a telephone line blocking the road, there was no time to get the action cams set up to record. The only way around the telephone line was through an abandoned market parking lot and we were unable to get around a telephone pole. Needing to back out due to unlevel ground, a well-intentioned stranger came to help… “You’ll be fine, keep coming”. I’m glad we didn’t listen to him! Trish told me to stop and I did. Continue to back would have ripped off one of our hydraulic stabilizers.
What we do have on camera is the next guy “helping” by providing unclear hand gestures. Trish was on the phone via Bluetooth and we were both ignoring him. Overall, this was a great reminder that when things go wrong, everyone wants to help, but not everyone is equipped to do so and no one wants to take responsibility for providing wrong instructions. The next time you’re in a “situation” here are three things to remember:
1) Stop and assess the satiation completely
2) Remind yourself that you’re not in a hurry
3) Communicate your plan clearly and let your spotter know what to say and when to say it.
