What's the best workout warm up?
Ultimately, any warm up will do … because most people don't warm up at all.
But the best warm up consists of four essential components:
Blood flow exercise - First you must raise core temperature so the chemical reactions in your muscles take place fast leading to better function of the nervous system and muscles. In addition, cardiovascular exercise in the beginning of your warm up will increase blood flow to the muscles, tendons, and other connective tissue, plus prime your brain and nervous system for exercise and ensure that the cartilage in your joints saturates with synovial fluid.
Mobility drills - The second critical component of a warm-up is mobility work. A quick circuit of movements that focus on full range of movement to warm up the joints and surrounding tissues is the most useful.
Body tension drills - The third critical component of a warm up is positional drills, otherwise known as body tension drills. The most useful positioning drills for bodyweight training are the plank, side planks, reverse plank, arches and hollow holds.
Skill work - Depending on your training style skill work may not be as important. If you are training for gymnastics or calisthenics then skill work is essential and it's important to do it early in your workout before you fatigue. We prioritise skill work for our senior students who are practicing a calisthenics skills immediately after the warm up.
The goal of a warm-up is to prime the body into an optimal state for your workout and address any deficiencies in movement. It should be specific to your workout, and your personal needs.
