Mini sketchbook project - Whimsical drawing ideas MINI SKETCHBOOK PROJECT - WHIMSICAL DRAWING IDEAS

This video is the continuation of my mini sketchbook project.

In this timelapse drawing video I share some tips about how to start drawing figures so that you can eventually feel more confident about adding them to your paintings.

So many people I talk to want to be able to draw and paint figures. Of course! Who wouldn’t?

A figure adds interest, scale and colour to your painting. But most of those same people say they are terrified at the prospect of painting a human figure. One of the things I like to prescribe for this affliction is a dose of whimsy.

Really it’s just a mindset thing. Its not so much that I think everyone needs to be drawing fairies. Rather, I think that having a light hearted approach to your drawing makes everything a little easier. We learn best in the spirit of play. And when you are practicing figure drawing it is a so much less pressure to be thinking that you are drawing a fairy rather than a human being. It automatically liberates you from perfection.

I mean, have you ever seen a fairy? If the face you draw turns out a little wide or the legs a bit short its considerably less disheartening on a fairy than a person. Who’s to say that isn’t what fairies are supposed to look like?

Now I’m not suggesting that a serious landscape painter is going to want to slap a fairy in the middle of their scene. But it does take a bit of practice and confidence to include a figure in your painting. (But it’s easier than you think!)

You see the secret to painting believable figures is in the proportions. The best way to get them right is by practicing. And you are going to do a whole lot more practicing if you are having fun. You make the best paintings when you are smiling. Your joy is visible in your painting in the same way that you can taste the love in a mother’s cooking.

So... happy painting!
