Nouns are of 6 kinds. They are
1. Proper Noun
2. Common Noun
3. Collective Noun
4. Concrete Noun OR Material Noun
5. Abstract Noun
6. Compound Noun
Now let’s discuss all these kinds one by one.
Proper Noun.
Name of a particular person, place, animal or thing which is given to that person or place individually.
Examples: Pakistan, United States of America, Peshawar, Sialkot, Noor Aslam , Miss Fatima Jinnah etc.
Remember that Proper nouns cannot be translated from one language to another, i.e. Noor Aslam will be called Noor Aslam in every language. The first letter of Proper noun is written in capital even if it is in the middle or at the end of the sentence.
Common Noun:
Common nouns are names which we give in general to every person, place, animal or thing of the same class or kind.
As you know we say girl , boy, woman , man, father, table, animal to every animal, bird to every bird, and city etc. So these are called common noun.
Common noun can be translated from one language to another. They are written in small alphabets unless they come at the beginning of the sentence.
Collective Noun:
The name of a group or collection of the same kind of persons, animals and things is called a collective noun.
Examples:
Team of player, Class ( of students) , Staff ( of office), Flock ( of birds or sheep), Swarm ( of bees) etc.
Concrete noun OR Material Noun:
Things which we can see or touch. Names of those things are called concrete nouns, or material nouns.
For example: Clock, tree, table, apple, fan and books etc.
All these things can be seen and touched.
Abstract Noun:
Name given to states, feelings, concepts or ideas etc which have no physical existence.
For example:
Fear, anger, love, kindness, intelligence, wisdom, heat, beauty, honesty, bravery and air etc.
Compound Noun: Compound nouns are words for people, places, animals, things or ideas made up of two or more words.
Most compound nouns are made with nouns that have been modified by adjectives or other noun.
For example:
School + bus = school bus
Tooth and paste makes toothpaste etc.
Compound noun can be formed in three ways.
Closed form: Simply join two words together to form a single word with no space between them.
Such as Key and Board is Keyboard Also Foot and ball is football.
Hyphenated form: connect two or more words with one or more pyphens between them.
Such as Six-pack, Dining-table.
Open form: When two or more words that functions as one unique word but still written as two or more separate words, with a space between each word.
For example: Post office and water tank
These words are spoken as one word but they have a space in them.
