I went to thirteen European cities on Phil Good Travel, and it was one of the most amazing journeys of my life. Let’s break down some of the biggest things I learned. Rule # 1 is NO EXPECTATIONS. More often than not, having preconceived notions of a place will take away from your experience. Free yourself from expectations and travel with an open mind. Tip #2 is USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. Not only is it the cheapest way to get around, you’ll also get to see how local people really are, and strike up conversations along the way. Tip #3 is PACK YOUR PATIENCE. European cities are typically crowded places. There are lines, lots of people, and if you’re not patient it can ruin the whole experience. If this sounds rough, then tip #4 is TRAVEL IN THE OFF SEASON. Next up, specifically for Black Travelers is tip #5: FIND A FORUM. Search out black travel forums and don’t be afraid to post questions about how black travelers are received in the different places you’re going. And remember, your REPRESENTATION MATTERS. For many locals, you may be the first black person they’ve ever interacted with. Next up, tip #6: consider the “I’ll TRY IT DIET.” In other words, when experiencing other cultures, don’t overlook their food.
