"Conservation of globally significant biodiversity of the Western Tien Shan" for 2018

The government of the Kyrgyz Republic, having undertaken to increase the area of specially protected areas up to 10%, demonstrates a positive trend. Due to the newly formed three parks, Alatay, Kan-Achuu and Khan Tengri, the share of protected areas reached 7.38%. The UNDP-GEF project “Conservation of globally significant biodiversity and related land and forest resources of the Western Tien Shan to support sustainable livelihoods” contributes greatly to the conservation of the snow leopard population in the country, and in particular in the Western Tien Shan. The project has ambitious goals - to help preserve and multiply biodiversity both within and outside of natural resources, helping local communities in the sustainable management of forests and pastures, and government agencies in strengthening environmental policy.
