Baby Chicks Off Grid is a BIG Decision!

Baby Chicks Off Grid is a BIG Decision! We wanted to share with you how we raise the baby chicks off the grid here on our homestead as well as discussing the responsibility that comes along with that decision.

Living Sustainably isn't just about raising your own food like raising chickens for meat or eggs. Learning how to manage a flock of birds is a very important part of having a sustainable flock. Bringing in new birds from time to time is necessary to maintain a healthy flock. There are a number of ways that you can do that from acquiring hatching eggs to slip under a broody hen to picking up day-old chicks which is what we did this year.

We chose to get the day-old chicks because they were sexed pullets which means they will all be hens. When you raise chicks from hatching eggs you can easily get more roosters than hens and we mainly have our chickens for eggs.

Thank you so much for watching my humble video!
